History of Color TV Age

1981~1990South Korean news media were under direct government control for many years after the assassination of Park Chung-hee on October 26, 1979 and South Korea fell under the new military regime, which merged and abolished newspaper and broadcasting organizations. However, thanks to the democratic movement in 1987, people started to redefine the functions and roles of the broadcasting companies. It was when MBC began providing color TV programs right before moving to Yeouido. Furthermore, after the successful broadcasting of the 1988 Seoul Olympics, MBC was able to achieve an unparalleled growth. Thereby, Yeouido-age can be defined by the growth-age symbolized as MBC’s great take-off.

  • 1989 MBC Broadcasting Code declared
    Theme song “A Good Friend to Meet, MBC” started to be used
  • 1988 Established the Foundation for Broadcast Culture
    Broadcasted the Seoul Olympics (joint production with KBS)
  • 1987 MBC Standard FM broadcasting launched
  • 1986 Jung-dong HQ broadcast facilities integrated to Yoido building to start transmission from Yoido.
    Unmanned TV relay station established in Ulleungdo Island
  • 1985 Nationwide simultaneous FM radio broadcasting
    The first OB van for TV in Korea was first used
  • 1984 Multi-sound TV broadcasting started
  • 1982 Completed the construction of Yeouido Studio
    Yeouido Studio Yeouido Company Building (early 1980s)
  • 1981 Launch of a national color TV channel
    Spun off from The Kyunghyang Shinmun
